Leafy St John's Wood is a quiet north-west London suburb that's as elegant and affluent as the neighbouring Hampstead, Primrose Hill and Belsize Park. When the former forest was being built up in the early 1800s, the designers favoured spreads of villa-style homes rather than shoulder-to-shoulder terraced houses, and although things have clearly changed in the interim, much of St John's Wood remains discreet and tasteful. The district has some delightful areas of greenery, with St John's Wood Church Grounds, a local nature reserve, winning a Green Flag Award. St John's Wood is notable for its A-list residents, including Sir Paul McCartney. Fans on tours of "Beatles London" are also in the right place for Abbey Road Studios, a 19th Century house converted into the first-ever custom-built recording studio, later made world-famous by the Fab Four. Outside is a favourite spot for photographs - the zebra crossing pictured on the cover of "Abbey Road". The other big attraction in St John's Wood is Lord's Cricket Ground, known as "the home of cricket". Visitors touring the ground may additionally visit the MCC Museum, full of cricketing memorabilia. Also in St John's Wood is the London Jewish Museum of Art.
