It is generally accepted that cricket almost certainly reached London and the historic county of Middlesex by the 16th Century. However, the earliest known definitive reference to cricket in London comes from 1680. This is recorded in a later book which notes that the reference, which is apparently unfit for publication, mentions two umpires and also strongly suggests that they were playing the more modern double wicket form of the game. The first known official match played in Middlesex was in July 1707 between London and Croydon. Cricket was well established in London by the time Middlesex County Cricket Club was officially launched in 1864. The Marylebone Cricket Club had been established since at least the mid 18th century and had taken over from Hambledon as the dominant force in cricket by this time. Middlesex CCC has been considered a first class county team since 1864 and has always been a strong contender for titles. Middlesex was proclaimed Champion County in 1866 shared the honour again in 1878. The team boasts ten outright County Championship titles spread throughout its history, the first being won in 1903. Middlesex also has two shared County Championships; in 1949 and 1977.
