Pimlico is perhaps one of the least famous areas of central London, even though it's within the City of Westminster and enjoys a riverside location on the north bank of the Thames, opposite Vauxhall. The scenic Pimlico Gardens, spreading out parallel to the water, are as popular with locals and visitors as they are with individuals and firms holding marquee events. The area, newly fashionable among homebuyers, features a mix of handsome Victorian townhouses designed by Thomas Cubitt and local authority housing which in places like the landmark Hide Tower building has also become highly desirable. Pimlico's big tourist attraction is the Tate Britain gallery which contains the world's finest collection of British art, with exhibits dating back to 1500. A regular boat service sails between Tate Britain and Tate Modern, also stopping at the London Eye. Pimlico is at the centre of SW1's annual SouthWestFest summer festival, and it's a perfect base for river tours and walks. It's also within easy reach of destinations such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Churchill Museum and Somerset House. Pimlico is ideally situated for travellers, with access to the A4. Victoria Station is nearby to the north west.
