The north-London suburb of Hornsey was largely established at the beginning of the 1900s, but two landmarks recall much earlier times. In the High Street, St Mary's Tower and graveyard survive from Hornsey's ancient parish church. The tower, dating back to 1500, has recently been re-opened for worship. The Old Schoolhouse, a delightful small building in Tottenham Lane, was constructed in 1848 and now houses the Hornsey Historical Society. Another important venue is the Grade II-listed former Hornsey Town Hall. Built in 1935, it's now being converted into an arts and community centre with meeting rooms, rehearsal and performance spaces, a cinema, and a shop, café and bar. Interest in the arts has been growing in tandem with Hornsey's regeneration. The New River Village development of thoroughly modern apartments also contains the Royal Academy Schools Gallery, which holds exhibitions and has an artist in residence, chosen annually from the graduates. The Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, meanwhile, presents productions at contemporary venues around London. Hornsey's varied nightlife includes the ViVa world music bar and restaurant, which customers deem worthy of the West End, and fresh-air fans enjoy the diverse attractions of Priory Park and Stationers Park, both Green Flag holders.
