As was so often the story the once rural community of Harlesden was drawn into the capital’s sprawling grasp by the grown of the great city outwards and the 19th century development of improved transportation links. These made it easier for the middle classes to commute, and the operation of the railways in particular necessitated the building of hosing for the network’s workers. The interwar years saw Harlesden become an increasingly industrial area, with a huge industrial estate on its doorstep with food factories of significance built there. Again in common with many other areas following WWII Harlesden saw several waves of immigration, bringing people of Irish origin, then from the Caribbean, the Indian sub-continent, and latterly Africa, Brazil and Portugal, making the area a vibrant multi-cultural one with a name for sporting connections – especially boxing – and musical innovation, Joe Strummer a noted one-time resident. Harlesden is today following the trend of gentrification that has been changing the face of outlying areas of the capital over recent decades, bringing an influx of young families attracted by the solid Victorian housing stock and the easy commute via Harlesden Station on the Bakerloo Line and London Overground.
