The former village of Hackney is at the heart of the east-London borough which takes its name. An historic village, it became a posh countryside address during the Tudor era, surrounded by the grand homes of aristocrats. But centuries later, when the railway rolled in, Hackney was ready for industrialisation and extensive house-building. Today, the re-named Hackney Central retains one ancient relic - a 13th Century tower surviving from the medieval St Augustine's Church. Hackney spreads itself out around Mare Street, and a little further beyond it to the north. This is a lively place bustling with bars, restaurants and exciting shopping, and home-buyers are flocking back to the Georgian and Victorian housing so prevalent in residential roads. The most famous part of the district, however, is Town Hall Square, the location of the old Grade II-listed town hall, various municipal amenities including a museum, and the celebrated Hackney Empire. This old music hall, built by the imaginative architect Frank Matcham in 1901, has presented some of the world's biggest stars during its lifetime as a concert venue, TV set, bingo hall and contemporary variety theatre. For those in search of space, meanwhile, the acres of London Fields are easily reached.
