Attraction in Hackney
A unique survival in London's East End, Sutton House was built in 1535 (when Hackney was a rural village) by Ralph Sadleir, a rising star at the court of Henry VIII. It became home to successive merchants, Huguenot silk-weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and Edwardian clergy, and although altered over the years, remains an essentially Tudor house. Oak panelled rooms and carved fireplaces survive intact and an exhibition tells the history of the house and its former occupants.
