The south-east London suburb of Eltham has lots going for it. It's close to the tourist attractions of Greenwich and Docklands, and it's just a short train journey away from the centre of London. At the same time, Eltham has abundant woodland, farmland and parks, with many excellent walks, and it's near to Kent. Visitors will appreciate Eltham's historic buildings. English royalty lived for several hundred years at the 15th Century moated Eltham Palace. The magnificent Great Hall still survives as part of a lavish new mansion constructed in the 1930s. Some of the original palace grounds now house the Royal Blackheath Golf Course. Near the Palace is the Tudor Barn. It once belonged to the Well Hall manor house, since demolished. Set in Well Hall Pleasaunce - beautiful green-flag gardens with ponds and woodland - the Barn is now a pub. The Tarn, a delightful lakeside garden, is notable for its wildfowl, while Severndroog Castle, a tall, triangular folly dating back to 1784, towers over the surrounding landscape. Also well worth visiting are the Avery Hill Park Winter Gardens, with an exotic Hothouse, and the Woodlands Farm Trust, a 98-acre wildlife habitat incorporating woodland, wetland, fields and ancient hedgerows.
