E.V. Lucas is probably best suited to the old label ‘man of letters,’ given the range of his literary work. From his first job as a bookseller’s apprentice he went on to write for a leading London newspaper, pen children’s stories (with his wife Elizabeth), write biographies, most famously work as a Punch essayist, also working as a travel writer, playwright, novelist, publisher’s reader and eventually head of Methuen & Co.
