Battersea stands on the south bank of the Thames, opposite Chelsea. Visitors crossing the river by train into Victoria Station can't fail to notice Battersea Power Station, the district's great landmark building and, in its current state of disrepair, the symbol of a vanished industrial past. While residents have been fighting successive campaigns to save this iconic structure from ruthless developers, Battersea has gone up in the world to become a highly desirable address. However, its most famous attractions have been here for more than a century. The legendary Dogs & Cats Home still finds new families for abandoned pets, and Battersea Park, which opened in 1858, guarantees a wonderful day out. To walk through its different gardens, or along the lake or riverside, is to chance upon, perhaps, the Peace Pagoda, the very affordable children's zoo, or a sculpture by the likes of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. The park provides for sports from rowing and fishing to tennis, football and croquet, while in various locations, there are regular exhibitions and antiques and arts fairs. Outside of the park, the area enjoys a thriving cultural scene, with the Battersea Arts Centre and Theatre 503 among its leading performance venues.
