Acton is an Anglo-Saxon name meaning Oak Town, and for centuries, this was a village surrounded by forests and fields. By the 1700s, it had become a favourite country retreat for rich and titled people, many hoping to boost their health by drinking the mineral water from Acton Wells. In the late 19th Century, Acton was awash with small laundries, and so the one-time Oak Town was dubbed Soapsuds Island. In the 1900s, Acton blew away the bubbles, got into industry in a big way, and grew into a cheerful west London suburb. Its oldest building is The Elms, a 1700s villa that now houses part of Twyford CE High School. Gunnersbury Park Museum is a lovely Regency house once occupied by the Rothschild banking family. The museum, detailing local history, is surrounded by gardens, woodlands, lakes and sports grounds. Worth visiting, too, is the London Transport Museum Depot, which stores 370,000 items including trains and buses. Acton enjoys a Saturday market, friendly shops and pubs, excellent road and train links, and plentiful parks and green spaces. Park Royal, to the north, has a cinema and bowling complex, and will soon host firstcentral, a new international business and leisure park.
