Eric Ravilious

Eric Ravilious studied, and later taught at, both the Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He was a gifted wood engraver, painter (including some wonderful murals), book illustrator and designer. His designs for Wedgwood were very popular, the one for Edward VIII’s coronation being reworked for George VI’s and Elizabeth II’s. In 1939 he became a war artist attached to the Admiralty, his paintings of warplanes particularly memorable. While on a search and rescue flight off Iceland his plane disappeared, he and the four-man aircrew subsequently declared lost in action.
