Nearly eight miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, lies Haydon Bridge, on the A69 the main road built by the Romans from Newcastle to Carlisle. The town was settled in Saxon times, the name Haydon meaning enclosure. The town has an ecclesiastical parish of the same name. It’s church bearing a Roman font and altar was founded in the twelfth century and the building still survives although the present church, built in 1796, is dedicated to St Cuthbert. The bridge across the Tyne was an important crossing point, the current bridge was erected in 1773 replacing the previous one which was destroyed by flooding. In the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745 for James and Charles, Viscount Langley and Earls of Derwentwater who lived at Langley Castle, just south of the town, took part in the uprising and were beheaded on Tower Hill in London for treason. In the 1830’s, the railway replaced plans to build a canal between Newcastle and Carlisle. A station at Haydon Bridge brought about growth in population but the area remained essentially an agricultural community abd di not expand like its neighbour Haltwhistle. Today, Haydon Brisge is popular with tourists exploring Hadrian’s Wall and the surrounding countryside.
