John Martin
Born in Haydon Bridge, NorthumberlandBorn on 19th of July 1789
Died on 17th of February 1854
Martin was apprenticed (briefly) to a coach-maker, then worked for and studied with a painter who took his pupil to London. After some struggles he won success with his large-scale paintings of landscapes and particularly of biblical scenes, most famously Belshazzar’s Feast, and was at the centre of an eclectic group of artists and thinkers. After a period out of favour, and time where he was obsessed by other matters, including London’s sewerage system, he returned with some success to his monumental canvases.
