Blanchland is a small village in Northumberland on the border with County Durham. It is a model village with picturesque houses set against a background of woodland and open moorland. Walter de Bolbec named the village for the Premonstratensian White Canons and dates to the founding of the monastery in 1165. After the Dissolution, the estate fell into decline, owned first by the Radcliffes and then by the Forsters of Bamburgh, in 1699 Dorothy Forster married Lord Crewe, Bishop of Durham, who bought the debt-ridden estate and formed Blanchland out of the medieval abbey. The Lord Crewe Arms has a vast fireplace in which General Tom Forster hid during the 1715 Jacobite rising and the ghost of his sister supposedly haunts the hotel. Other famous guests have included WH Auden, Philip Larkin, Benjamin Britten and Sir Peter Pears. Its close proximity to the Derwent Reservoir in the North pennines provides some spectacular scenery and allows Blanchland to provide excellent sailing and fishing activities .The village has a variety of small shops, a post house, tearoom and gallery. The village is frequently used as a setting for period films set in the eighteenth century due to its population of 140 and its unspoilt qualities.
