Ardara is a small heritage town with a big personality. Located in south-west Donegal where the River Owentocker flows into Loughros More bay, Ardara is famous for tweeds, hand-knitted woollens and crafts, all for sale around the town. The Heritage Centre offers an exhibition explaining the history of Donegal Tweed. It also includes an art gallery, and a tapestry weaver, a bogwood sculptor and a silversmith are on hand to demonstrate their skills. Ardara is a pretty and traditional town with small, fascinating shops and pubs, but it's not afraid to throw a party. It holds a variety of annual festivals including weekends of country music, dancing, multicultural celebration and matchmaking, the four-day Cup of Tae traditional music knees-up, the International Walking Festival and the ever- popular Agricultural Show. Ardara is surrounded by some spectacular scenery. The local ring fort, up on a clifftop, affords wonderful views over the countryside. Other beauty spots include Maghera Caves, reached via a splendid silvery beach, and the lush, green Glengesh Pass. Ardara is within easy reach of golden, Blue Flag beaches, great golf courses and excellent fishing waters (particularly for salmon and trout), and boating, watersports and pony trekking are also popular activities.
