Portballintrae is a harbour village located on the spectacular North Antrim Coast, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean between the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle. A former fishing settlement, Portballintrae grew up around a horseshoe-shaped bay at the mouth of the River Bush, still plentifully supplied with trout and salmon. Upstream, a mile or so away, is Bushmills, the village's more famous inland neighbour. Many of the old, whitewashed cottages that once lined the bay at Portballintrae have been restored to their traditional charm, although the village has expanded in recent times, and many of the dwellings, old and new, have been snapped up as second homes. Residents and visitors alike adore the simplicity of Portballintrae with its awe-inspiring coastal walks, golden beach, rugged rocks and sand dunes. The dunes, at Bushfoot Strand and its associated golf course, are regularly crossed by a romantic steam train running between Bushmills and the Giant's Causeway, a World Heritage Site and designated area of outstanding natural beauty. However, Portballintrae has some fascinating history of its own: an unprecedented collection of gold jewellery from a Spanish Armada ship was retrieved from these waters in the 1960s, and is now exhibited at Belfast's Ulster Museum.
