Ballycastle is a small, uncrowded town surrounded by dramatic scenery. Situated on the north-east coast, it enjoys a beautiful bayside location and an award-winning beach, framed to the east by the spectacular cliff of Fairhead and to the west by Kinbane Head, a rugged outcrop bearing a 16th Century castle ruin. Ballycastle is overlooked by Knocklayde Mountain and is at the heart of the nine Glens of Antrim, two of which - Glentaisie and Glenshesk - converge at the bay. On the slopes of Knocklayde, Ballycastle Forest is worth visiting. Out to sea is Rathlin Island, a bird-lover's paradise, and beyond it, Scotland's Mull of Kintyre. Ballycastle is a charming town where the old seafront shops and bars look across to a modern marina, while the waterside golf course is arranged around Bonamargy Friary, built around 1500. Traditional folk music is popular in the pubs and at festivals, held in The Diamond town square - which also hosts the 400-year-old Auld Lammas Fair. Ballycastle is a centre for hiking, cycling, fishing and deep-sea diving, with other sports provided by the Recreation Centre. It's also an ideal base for exploring the many magnificent sights of the Antrim Coast Road.
