Bala is located in the Welsh County of Gwynedd is Snowdonia with a stunning backdrop of mountains and nestling against the banks of Bala Lake or Llyn Tegid as it is more locally known and is the largest natural body of water in inland Wales. The town centre consists of a main street with a variety of local shops and is a popular tourist destination for those who enjoy windsurfing on the lake because of the unique geography of the area the winds sweep down the mountain valley creating the sometimes ideal conditions. The lake also plays host to fishermen as well as the Gwyniad – a are fish unique to this lake, it is a type of land locked herring a member of the whitefish family. For those who prefer a stroll through the picturesque mountains or to use their mountina bikes then Bala has plenty of variety to offer. Alongside the lake is Bala Miniature Railway the train ravels around the lake using locomotives that were formerly used in the local slate quarries. Bala is to be found just off the A494 and is also a popular place to stop if you are travelling further into mid Wales.
