Buckingham used to be the county town of Buckinghamshire until the 16th century, when Aylesbury took over. This busy and very typically pretty market town in the vale of Aylesbury has mainly beautiful Georgian buildings, as the town had to be rebuilt after a disastrous fire in 1724. There are a huge variety of pubs here, such as The Woolpack with its riverside beer garden, the lively Kings Head and the quiet, relaxing Three Cups! There are an extensive range of restaurants too, serving cuisine from around the world! It has a variety of places in which to stay too – from splendid hotels to a Travelodge and B&Bs. Market days are Tuesday and Saturday, with a Farmers market being held on the first Tuesday of every month. There are a number of shops offering the usual retailers and some smaller independants. There is easy access from here to Oxford and Milton Keynes, as well as the tourist attractions of Blenheim Palace, Silverstone motor racing circuit and Stowe gardens. Stowe House is just outside Buckingham and is now an independent public school. The lavish mansion had wealthy owners (the Verney family) prior to the 18th century and they employed the talents of gardeners like Capability Brown to create the spectacular landscapes, covering 325 acres and incorporating 32 garden temples, various monuments and 6 lakes! It is owned by the National Trust, being open to the public in summer. Buckingham is home to one of the first purpose-built gaols in England . The ancient cells still remain in this Gothic castle-like building, now a museum in the Milton Keynes Heritage Group and the Tourist Information Centre for the town. Open daily all year round.
