Set in the steep valleys and folds of the Cotswolds, 3 miles south of Stroud, Nailsworth grew out of a series of scattered communities that lived alongside the brooks and streams that drain the from the hills and flow northward to meet the River Frome. By 1663 two main centres of settlement had been established; Lower Nailsworth, where the Avening and Horsley streams meet and Upper Nailsworth, further south where the old Tetbury road crossed the Horsley stream. Nailswoth owed it`s development almost entirely from the cloth making industry; although it`s history is much older, the Romans had built a Temple in the area. The first mill is recorded in 1448 and by the 18th century there were at least 14 mills in operation along the various brooks and streams (not all were producing cloth, the Millbottom Mill was a corn mill). Communications were rudimentary, consisting of rough trackways and pack-horse trails, road improvements in the 18th and 19th centuries ended it`s comparative isolation. The growth of Nailsworth into a small compact town was stimulated by the opening, in 1780, of the new Turnpike road from Bath. In 1830 coaches were calling daily at the George Inn and the railway arrived in 1867 (but closed to passengers just after the Second World War). Many of the mills have survived but in other guises, converted into houses and flats, others have been put to other uses (small engineering works, walking stick making). The Egypt Mill is now a Hotel and Restaurant. Isaac Hillier who was a butcher started a Bacon-curing business in 1820 and by 1865 was curing 300 pigs a week his factory went on to become one of the largest in the country. The early 20th century saw further expansion and a council estate was built at Park Road in 1921, expansion as a residential town has continued into the 21st century with the Hilliers factory making way for new housing. The enchanting scenery surrounding the whole district makes Nailsworth a very good centre for touring and for those who enjoy walking.
