Between Harpenden and Welwyn is the village of Ayot St Lawrence with only 50 houses, an historic pub and two churches (one of which is Norman). However, the village was home to the golfer Nick Faldo and one of these houses was owned from 1906 till his death in 1950 by the famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. This Edwardian house (Shaw’s Corner) is open to the public and a National Trust property incorporating the great dramatist's revolving Writing Hut, various literary and personal effects, including his Oscar and Nobel Prize. There are also open-air performances of Shaw’s plays each summer. The little village is on a hill, immersed in Hertfordshire countryside, perfectly located for walking and cycling (it is on National Cycle Route 12). The lanes to access the village are narrow but exceptionally pretty, with overhanging trees, wild flowers, etc. The Brocket Arms is a popular pub serving food, offering B&B accommodation and a beer garden. This establishment is reputedly haunted too!
