Bury
Bury Market. A fantastic place for meat and vegetable shopping in general, and with boastin 250,000 visitors a week it’s a thriving place too. The steamed potatoes here are mouth-watering, served with butter and salt, but the real delicacy is Bury black pudding. It is sad that something the middle class foodie would lap up in France (ah! boudin noir!) is shunned in England by those who should know better. Like the best peasant food the world over the ingredients are a testimony to poverty and ingenuity driving the creation of a delicacy made from seemingly unpromising ingredients. Basically black pudding is made from blood and fat. But the secret is the flavourings used: in Bury traditionally they use pennyroyal, marjoram, thyme, mint and celery seed. The Black Pudding Stall serves them hot with lashings of mustard, and if you turn your nose up at that more fool you.
Heywood
"Lying to the north of Manchester City Centre is the town of Heywood where there has been a settlement since 1246 when it was known as Heghwode. Today Heywood is quite well placed for the North West motorway network allowing access to both the M60 and M66 as well as the A627(M) – the M60 being the main circulatory around Manchester and one that technically starts and ends at Stockport, whilst the M66 runs from Ramsbottom through to where it joins the M60 at Whitefield near Bury, the A627(M) is not quite a motorway, but it does link Rochdale with Oldham. There is a local rail network - East Lancashire Railways – but this is mainly a tourist attraction running steam and (more recently) diesel services as far as Bury, but this is only at weekends. For those longer national rail journeys you would need to get to Castleton some 2 miles away from Heywood. Heywood also claims to have one of the largest industrial estates in Europe at Pilsworth Road " - Dave
Manchester
Instead of travelling around Manchester on the M60, try this route:
From the M60 or M61 or wherever you arrive into the Manchester conurbation area, take the A6 across Manchester, towards Buxton travelling through Stockport, Hazel grove and Disley. Suburban Manchester is so much nicer than the urban side - Denise
The best advice for parking in Manchester is don’t – if you are travelling in from a surrounding area, park at your local railway station and buy an inexpensive day return rail ticket for around £6. Cheaper and less stressful than paying all-day parking. If you only plan to stay a couple of hours or so, head for the Great Northern car park – it is huge and usually has spaces somewhere. - Denise
