An entirely volunteer-owned and operated narrow gauge railway, the
line operates every Sunday between May and September from 11.00am until
4.30pm as well as Wednesday evenings in July and August between 7.00pm and
9.00pm and in peak season also Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm until 9.00pm.
The railway operates with its original steam locomotive "Sea Lion" dating
from 1896 and also runs a set of re-built original coaches, with a secondary
steam locomotive called "Annie" (a replica built in 1998 by a member), three
diesel locomotives and a unique battery-electric locomotive named "Polar
Bear", a replica of a similar design of locomotive that operated the railway
in the 1920s.
A short walk walk from the nearby tram station of the Manx
Electric Railway, the main station is located deep in the heart of the glen
and the short line (just under one mile) terminates at the Sea Lion Rocks
where visitors can enjoy refreshments in the tea rooms, and examine the
remains of the fascinating old zoo which operated between 1893 and 1939.
