Latrobe's design of the porticos of the White House in Washington derived directly from his ideas for his first house, Hammerwood Park, in 1792. The concept of the house and surrounding magnificent landscape were the product of both the French Revolution and the agricultural revolution and guided tours here give a great insight into the history of the time.
Latrobe founded the profession of architecture in America and the building of Hammerwood in the Greek Revival style as a temple of Apollo and incorporating perspective tricks demonstrates the architect's genius. His influence on the parkland resembles the work of Humphrey Repton.
After conversion into flats the house was much neglected and was ultimately rescued in 1982 from the pop group, Led Zeppelin, in near ruin. The house has been lovingly and magnificently restored although a derelict room remains, just to remind visitors that the place needs considerable help!
School children enjoy learning about the Ancient Greeks here.
