Let us guess – the two things that spring to mind when you read Canterbury are 'Chaucer' and 'cathedral.' You'd be spot on, of course. But there's plenty more to this thriving ancient city, especially the bars and eateries popping up all over. As much a hit as when it first opened is buzzy Ha! Ha!, sporting pale-wood floors and long wooden tables. It serves great nibbles such as chargrilled chicken satay skewers with peanut dip, as well as more substantial dishes such as leg of lamb steak on a cannelloni and chorizo cassoulet. Comfort food hits the spot; free-range and skinny chips, fish fingers and chips. Lush. The American pancake stack is quite something too. Brunch is served 'til 4pm. And in case you're wondering, the typical crowd is a broad mix from solicitors to students.
