Sporting a nautical theme that will shiver your timbers, the Galley Restaurant is a fantastic fish restaurant in Topsham, just outside Exeter. It's heaped with awards from the AA, the RAC and the English Tourist Board, and chef Paul Da-Costa-Greaves is a Master Chef of Great Britain. Start with Thai mussels and clams spiked with lemon grass, garlic and ginger, followed by sparkling-fresh grilled fillet of brill with herbed wine and truffle lemon liquor. More elaborate mains include mille-feuille of scallops, turbot and sea trout on crushed potatoes, infused with red pimento and vanilla beurre blanc. Puddings, which carry seductive names like 'Wickedness' and 'Take Me', are gorgeously rich: try 'Forbidden Fruit', a delicate west Indian blend of booze, fruit and spice. Produce is organic wherever possible, and the chef's passion for food is evident in every dish. The Galley is definitely on the crest of a wave.
