Best rates for a Local Hotel

This was a long standing booking made some months ago. It was for one night B&B with ensuite facilities for my wife and myself. Accommodation is basic and the hotel's decor is a bit tired with soiled carpets, and one bathroom sliding door on a landing (presumably for the use of those in non ensuite rooms) was off its runners and the bathroom unuseable.. Rates quoted were £50 a night, somewhat less than that mentioned on the internet. We had room 3. It was small but comfortable and ensuite facilities were fully working. Slight smokiness detectable in the bedroom but this is a pub with accommodation rather than anything else. No milk was provided for the in-room coffeee making system however and the provided TV only worked on a few channels - and then not reliably and there was no remote control. Nonetheless the bed was comforatble. The problem came at breakfast when we and two other couples came downstairs at the agreed time of 08:30 to find the whole hotel in darkness, no tables laid for breakfast, no one in the kitchen and even no one apparently on the premises. At 9am we had to leave (to take our son - who was staying elsewhere - to the station at Stroud) and the other two couples had to leave because they wanted to go to church. We left a note and returned about 10.15 or so. A person was in then cleaning but the person in charge was said to be out shopping - for milk as it turned out - but when he turned up although the cleaner made us some tea - one cup being given us having a ring of previous tea in it and it was left to us to find a replacement. We never did get offered breakfast, no one knew we had a problem and the so called manager never appeared. In the end we rather felt we did not want to eat anything at this place, we paid a discounted rate to the lady who had been vacuuming the bar and left. I do not know how the other two couples fared nor if they ever did come back after church. This may be unrepresentative of the normal service at the Crown but is was wholly unacceptable. It was being said that the hotel is under new management and if so then it clearly isn't working. A conventional B&B (ie non-hotel) would undoubtedly have been better, cleaner and cheaper too.
