The Vale of Neath is situated in South Wales, in an area near
Swansea and
Port Talbot . The valley gets its name from the River Neath which also gave its name to the town of
Neath , an industrial town located at the foot of the Vale of Neath. The Vale of Neath consists of a narrow valley featuring steep wooded hills and is world famous for its many waterfalls. Among them are the 80-ft waterfall at Resolven and the Aberdulais Falls. The upper reaches of the valley, at the foothills of the
Brecon Beacons , is home to the waterfalls of four or five rivers, the Afon Hepste, Nedd Fechan, Afon Pyrddin, River Mellte and Sychryd. While the waterfalls at Melincourt and Aberdulais are found on the lower reaches of the Vale of Neath. This abundance of waterfalls has led to the region becoming known as 'Waterfall Country'. The Vale of Neath is home to the
Cefn Coed Colliery Museum , which is the restored and preserved remains of an industrial site. The museum tells the story of the former coal mine there, once the world's deepest. Huge oil refineries now dominate the coastal area where the valley meets the Celtic Sea.
