Made first stage appearance in 1936. Became well known as a variety entertainer. Made her name in BBC radio's 'Educating Archie'. Became famous with her 'Brummie' Marlene character. Had a long and successful television career, her appearances including The Girl Most Likely (1957), The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (1985), Smiley’s People (1983) and Cracker (1993). She appeared in a number films including The Killing of Sister George in 1968 and Entertaining Mr Sloane in 1970.
