Born 1836. Died 1920 - English astronomer.
Clerk at British War Office (1857-75) while devoting spare time to science. Designed a spectroscope in 1868. Postulated the existence of helium. Discovered and named the solar chromosphere. Believed atoms were capable of sub-division and stars were formed out of meteoric material. Worked in Science Museum, South Kensington from 1875. Founder of scientific periodical Nature (1869). Knighted in 1897.
