There was nothing quiet about Victoria Pendleton's arrival on cycling's sprinting scene in 2001. The Hitchin born track cyclist won four silver medals in national championships that year. In 2002 she could concentrate full-time on her cycling for the first time after she completed her university studies. The in-form cyclist qualified easily for the England Commonwealth Games team where she rode with distinction in the Sprint, making the last four.

In 2003 she based herself at the World Cycling Centre sprint school under Ross Edgar. She proved herself to be one of the very best up and coming female sprinters in the world that year. She narrowly missed out on a medal the World Championships in Stutgart in the sprint, finishing fourth.

She then made it into the exclusive sub 35 second club after finishing seventh in the 500m Time Trial. National records were also felled by Pendleton in both the 500m Time Trial and 200m Sprint qualifying Time Trial. She was m ore than a match for the opposition when she won the National Sprint, the 500m Time Trial and the Scratch Race titles.

Victoria Pendleton was selected for the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, joining Team GB Olympic squad for the first time. She finished sixth in the Time Trial and 9th in the 200m Sprint.

A year later she finally went to the top with a gold medal winning performance in the 2005 World Championships in Los Angeles in the Sprint event. She stayed in top form for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 winning another gold, again in the Sprint event, and earned a silver in the Time Trial.

Two years on from her first gold, this time at the 2007 World Championships in Mallorca, she showed the real extent of her talent with three golds in the Team Sprint, Sprint and Keirin.

She was selected to represent Team GB at the Beijing Olympic games in 2008 competing in the Sprint discipline
