Studied law at University of Liverpool but did not complete the degree. Joined the radio station LBC as a journalist. Moved to television news organisation ITN in 1976. Became the main presenter of Channel 4 News in 1989. Won several RTS Awards including two as Presenter of the Year. Returned to radio in 2002 presenting Jon Snow Reports on Oneword Radio. Writes regular articles for the Channel 4 News website. Patron of Prisoners Abroad and One World Broadcasting Trust. Declined an OBE.
