Born 1907. Died 1989 - English novelist & short story writer.

Wrote period romances and adventure stories many inspired by Cornwall. Books included Jamaica Inn (1936), Rebecca (1938) and My Cousin Rachel (1951). Short story The Birds became a classic Hitchcock movie. Later books included The Flight of the Falcon (1965), study of Francis Bacon and a volume of memoirs.
