Plume was Vicar of Greenwich for 46 years, concurrently Archdeacon of Rochester for the last 29. His fame, however, rests on the learned library he collected and donated to the town of Maldon in Essex, and on his endowment of a chair in Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. Both the library and the professorship remain operative today.
