Joan Littlewood

Like so many who become stars of stage and screen Joan Littlewood studied at RADA, though she disliked the experience and left early. Unlike so many she was a true innovator and person of principle, most famous for (in 1945) founding the Theatre Workshop in Manchester, which moved to Stratford in East London. Her politics were radically left wing, for which the BBC spurned her for years. Among her triumphs were stagings of A Taste of Honey, and (the first in Britain) of Brecht’s Mother Courage. She is perhaps most famous, however, for creating the stage version of Oh, What a Lovely War!
