Frederic Leighton
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Born on 3rd of November 1830
Died on 25th of January 1896

Leighton was one of the most successful painters (and sculptors) of the Victorian era, several reproductions of his paintings selling in large numbers. He mixed with the likes of Corot and Millet in Paris in the 1850s, was acquainted with the pre-Raphaelites in the 1860s in London, and became a Royal Academician in 1868 (and the Academy’s president 10 years later). Queen Victoria bought one of his paintings early in his career, and he enjoyed official patronage through his life, knighted in 1878, made a baronet in 1886, and given a peerage on January 24th 1896 – he died next day, and as a bachelor his peerage died with him, the shortest-lived in history.
