Jeremiah Horrocks
Born in Liverpool, MerseysideBorn in 1618
Died in Liverpool, Merseyside
Died on 3rd of January 1641
Horrocks, from a Liverpudlian Puritan family, studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (though he did not graduate, possibly through lack of funds). He worked either as a curate, or more probably given his beliefs as a tutor, in Much Hoole, Lancashire. Horrocks was a keen and brilliant mathematical astronomer who predicted the transit of Venus in 1639, proved the moon’s elliptical path round the earth, and improved on the then used estimates of the distance from earth to the sun.
