Graduated from Cambridge. Was Professor of Applied Mathematics and Theoritical Physics at Manchester University (1929-45) before returning to Cambridge in 1946. Best known for the development of numerical analysis and its application to atomic physics. Involved in the beginnings of the electronic digital computer.
