Became Labour MP for Belper in 1945. Served as Deputy Leader from 1960 to 1970 and was a senior Cabinet minister including Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the Labour government of the 1960s. Lost his seat in the 1970 general election. Created a life peer in 1970 when he changed his surname from Brown to George-Brown.
