Served throughout Peninsular War (1804-14) against Napoleon I. Spent nearly 30 years in garrison duty at Gibraltar, Barbados, Demerara and England. Commanded Highland Brigade during Crimean War. Commanded forces in India bringing rebellion to an end. Created Baron Clyde in 1858. Later made a Field Marshal.
