Born 1901. Died 1935 - Scottish novelist.

Pseudonym of James Leslie Mitchell. Member of the Communist Party. Served over 3 years with the RAF in Persia, India and Egypt. First published book was Hanno, or the Future of Exploration (1928). Best known for The Sunset Song (1932), the first book in a triology which included A Scots Quair, Cloud Howe and Grey Granite. Wrote a biography of the explorer Mungo Park.
