Graduated in medicine at St Andrew’s University. In 1962 discovered the drug netherlide, the first beta-blocking drug. Produced burimamide and cimetidine used in the treatment of ulcers. Shared 1988 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine . Awarded the Order of Merit in 2000.
