At the age of 16 he produced his satirical Memoirs of Extraordinary Painters. He spent much time on the Continent and wrote Vathek, in French (1787 France). When he returned to England in 1796 he built Fonthill Abbey, designed by James Wyatt, with a feature tower where he lived in mysterious seclusion until 1822. He published Italy with Sketches of Spain and Portugal in 1834.
