In 1806 he was appointed mathematical master in the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, a post held for over forty years. In 1823 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society and received the Copley medal in 1825. He was involved with steam locomotion and sat on the railway commissions of 1836, 1839, 1842 and 1845. His sons Peter and William Henry became noted civil engineers.
