Spent five years articled to a firm of solicitors before turning to literature. Edited six volumes of Celebrated Trials and Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence (1825). Travelled widely. Books included The Bible in Spain (1843), Lavengro (1851) and its sequel The Romany Rye (1857), novels about his own gypsy life.
