Britain’s first female mayor elected
Aldeburgh, Suffolk The 14th of November 1908 AD
Britain’s first female mayor had already rocked the male establishment in the country several times previously, becoming the first British woman to be entered on the medical register and the first female member of the British Medical Association.
After a life of service and struggle against the medical establishment Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in 1902 retired with her husband to Aldeburgh in Suffolk, the town she had grown up in. She continued, however, to be a powerful voice in the movement for female emancipation, making speeches and even storming the commons with fellow members of the Women’s Social and Political Union.
In Aldeburgh Elizabeth became involved in local issues and local political circles, and perhaps unsurprisingly given her accomplishments elsewhere was on November 14 1908 elected mayor of the quiet coastal town, the first female mayor in Britain.
