With its strategic position on the River Dearne, and the route between Sheffield and Bradford, there had almost certainly been a settlement in Barnsley for a long time prior to its mention in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it had some 200 inhabitants. There it is referred to as Berneslai, a name possibly derived from the Saxon words for barn and field, berne and lay respectively. Although these days the town has a population of more than 72,000, and the borough of more than 220,000, it is still surprisingly a rural area, including districts like Penistone. The town was granted a market charter in 1249, and was also given the right to hold an annual fair. Barnsley played a prominent role in the industrial age. Coal mining developed in the town before the industrial revolution, but was vital to that period when glass blowing and wire making were vital to the local economy, as was linen weaving. The town got its first railway in 1850. The textile industry like coal-mining has faded away, with not one of the town’s pits left open – the last to close was Goldthorpe in 1994 - but there is still glass making in the area, and it is perhaps symbolic of changing times that the first glass recycling bottle bank in the UK opened in Barnsley in the summer of 1977. The town is undergoing major redevelopment, retaining historic features such as the town square, but providing improved retail facilities, and with an impressive business support infrastructure – including the Barnsley Business Innovation Centre, the Digital Media Centre, and one of the country’s three Design Centres. Barnsley is also remaking itself as a transport hub, benefiting from its central location and the proximity of the M1 and the A1. Barnsley has a long list of famous sons and daughters, and a unique culture, rooted in the industrial past when brass bands were a focal point of many communities. Barnsley Council has been very active in developing the museums under its control, and those in other hands are thriving too, celebrating the industrial past, the arts, and the region. The local dialect and accent are still hanging on, harnessed by Bard of Barnsley Ian McMillan and heard in the dulcet tones of local lads Dickie Bird, Michael Parkinson, Darren Gough and Mick McCarthy. But all these famous products of the place must surely pale besides Barnsley’s great benefactor of humanity Joseph Bramah, who cleverly covered both ends by inventing both the beer pump and the flushing water closet.
