Withernsea is a rather old-fashioned English seaside resort, and nothing wrong with that. Its population of just fewer than 6,000 is swelled in the summer months by visitors coming to enjoy the Blue Flag beach. Like many other seaside places the days of high volume tourism have gone, though the holiday parks in the area still do good business. And though there are still amusement arcades in the town, people visiting these days are perhaps looking for something a bit more demanding or rewarding. The town itself has the famous lighthouse in its midst, 127 feet high, standing way above the buildings surrounding it. Though disused as a lighthouse, the building now serves as a museum to fifties actress Kay Kendall, who came from Withernsea. For those wanting to tour the area there is plenty to offer. Spurn Head is a short drive south, a unique place, wild and desolate, providing a special habitat for the wildlife to be seen on the nature trail there. There is rather gentler countryside on offer a few miles away along the A1033, with pretty villages like Ottringham and Burstwick. Holderness is flat country, good for walking and in the back lanes at least for cycling, though you should not forget that the windmills in the area were built for a reason, something hard to forget in the winter when the icy winds come in from the North Sea, though the weather in the summer is far more clement
