Unusually for a town of over 7,000 inhabitants, Pocklington – known locally as Pock - in the East Riding of Yorkshire is set away from all the main roads in the district. Perhaps this is results from the town’s antiquity – there is plenty of evidence nearby of Iron Age and even Bronze Age settlement – predating any road system. St Paulinus is said to have preached in the town in AD627, according to an inscription on a medieval cross found in the churchyard. The church, All Saints, dates from the 12th to 15th centuries, but there are still reminders evident of the Saxon building before the current one. Pocklington School, founded in 1514, is a notable public school with alumni as diverse as William Wilberforce, Tom Stoppard, and Adrian Edmondson. Pocklington was one of many towns in the area that suffered under William the conqueror’s harrying of the north, its value dropping from more than £50 to just £8 a year after that dreadful campaign The town sits on the edge of the Wolds, the chalk hills of this part of Yorkshire, and of flat arable land reclaimed from the marshes centuries ago. In medieval times wool was important to the town, with weaving and fulling locally as a result, but malting was also significant later, the different industries reflecting the different landscapes surrounding the place. In 1896 the town suffered a disastrous fire, which destroyed several buildings in the town centre, and local legend has it that the blaze was so bright that night that people in Market Weighton seven miles away could read by it. Apart from the natural beauty of the Wolds, Pocklington has Burnby Hall to offer the visitor, with its internationally important collection of water lilies. Kilnwick Percy Golf Club is just to the north of the town, but for those who prefer a good walk not to be spoiled as the saying goes, Pocklington canal has also been somewhat restored, and its paths provide notable places for spotting aquatic wildlife. For those after a bit of local shopping the market day is Tuesday.
